From A Lifelong Jennings Fan
One of the later and much scarcer of the wonderful Jennings books, This is indeed 'Jennings at Large', for the most part away from the Linbury Court school environment and instead in a block of flats in South London, where he is staying with his Aunt Angela after a brief camping holiday, Now mainly referrred to as John {very odd for a seeasoned reader of Jennings}, he strikes up a friendship with Emma, and through this friendship does a lot of good work in the name of animal welfare. There are some wonderful chapters, events that ring so true for the feel of the mid-seventies, so beautifully crafted by AB, Although I miss Darbishire, Venables, Temple, et al, for the majority of the the book, the wit and humanity of the Gaitskill Cour and Southcombe folk make this a very enjoyable book. Like all the other Jennings books I will reread it again and again with much enjoyment in future years.
