Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway V2 - Outstanding!
I got this because of being a fan of the Nickel Plate Road, as this was one of their companion lines. I have not seen Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway Volume 1, but would guess that it covers more recent engines and equipment. Volume 2 covers the origin of the line and provides great historical data about building the road and extending the tracks outward.
It starts in 1877 with the initial stretch of 12 miles of narrow gauge track from Huron, Ohio on Lake Erie to Norwalk, Ohio and expands from there. It is not a chronological tome, but a series of black and white photos covering various aspects and engaging stories grouped by a common bond.
The steam engines and their progressive growth to meet ever increasing needs leads off and includes shots of the yards as they were built and expanded. The trouble with low lying rails in flood plains is covered, along with the various accident photos as trestles gave way. The engine shops and yards have good detail shots, as do the everyday structures, like coal docks and tipples, coaling stations and water tanks, bridges and tunnels, and quite a few depots. Passenger cars are covered in detail, followed by freight cars, gondolas, hoppers, and finally the caboose.
This book is 128 pages full of photos and stories, both general and individual, that really leaves you with an understanding of how railroading was back in the days before diesel. If you need some detail shots for modeling various structures from around Ohio and West Virginia, here they are. Well done!

Historic Tales About Historic Rails
Great book, especially for a North Carolina rail fan. Several cars are described physically as well as historically, such as who owned them and where they went. This includes personal rail cars and a small biography of the historical people and companies that owned them. Each chapter ends with a bibliography of reference books used, in case you seek further information. Well done.
