Best Synthesis of His Talents
1 of 1 found this helpful I had the album on CD for ages. Numerous slow listens lately won me over to hunting down the vinyl on ebay. Lovingly produced reissue makes for a fine tribute. This has become my favorite Warren Zevon album in a distinguished catalog. This one best represents his strengths: A penchant for stay-with-you melodies, deep vocals, and above all prickly, provocative yet often touching lyrics. It's hard to believe the recording predates his life-ending diagnosis. The backing musicians are aces as are the arrangements, not a weak track to be found.

Worth the price for the take-it-with-you retro radiophile
2 of 2 found this helpful This radio offers convenience of use with battery op or AC plug in. If you like your technology retro this is for you, a throwback gadget you can tote around the house or anywhere. Sound quality is good and tuning is a breeze. I didn't expect receiver to pull in a suburban FM station I like--and it didn't--though that's no biggie with the wealth of options on the Chicago dial.
I'm glad I took the plunge and picked this up to replace a $10 radio turning fragile in its old age, which still operates after 10 years. That one had the weight advantage, though. Its "AA" batteries added much less weight than the "C"'s this model runs on.

shun risky vinyl, though your mileage may vary, but treasure the CD
I don't often submit reviews but when I do...it's because there's a bee buzzing in my bonnet. Confession: The assessment that follows couldn't be more torn. Five Star rating is for the music.
Re. music quality: Songwriter, guitarist, and (yes) vocalist Richard Thompson is his own most fearsome competition for the crown in all three categories. I never gave proper attention to CD of this title bought on original release until, running across its top-shelf ranking in his oeuvre by the man himself, I listened again. As with an astonishingly high percentage of Thompson songs, many here stay with you. Performed with gusto and provocatively arranged they make their mark musically and lyrically. For that reason, I "upgraded" to vinyl expecting improved sound.
So wrong. Album I bought was listed as "used" with no further detail. "Defective" would have been closer to the truth. Shards of vinyl crud blocked spindle holes and had to be flushed out before playing, a tell-tale sign that records were unlikely to have been previously played ("used"). Platters were pressed off center, noticeably warped, and riddled with clicks and pops! Needless to add, attempted cleanings with audioquest Ant-static Record Brush were no help. And wouldn't you know it, track #1, Disc #1 ("The Storm Won't Come"), my favorite go-to track, was the one most damaged. Ahoy, New West! Hello there, seller!
I'll be giving my CD a lot more attention now. I don't want to set eyes on--let alone spin--the ghastly vinyl again. Yikes! Nice cover pic, though, is the best I can say.
