Quirky and strangely moving film - never to be forgotten
1 of 1 found this helpful Lives of dutiful self denial culminating in a glorious feast. Set in a puritan settlement in the wilds of Jutland, revolving around the lives of two sisters, daughters of a pastor. They deny themselves marital happiness and artitstic expression, instead devoting themselves to charitable works and the continuance of their father's ministry. They take in Babette, fleeing for her life from the horrors of the French revolution. Unable to employ her they nevertheless house her and she becomes their home help. Just before the 100th anniversary of their faith Babette wins the lottery and offers to prepare and pay for the meal in celebration of the centenary.
