Use the correct cleaner.
Previously used carburettor cleaner (which I had lying around the garage) on the MAF sensor which made only a small improvement to the running problem.
Then read that you should only use the correct product so bought this Wynns EGR / MAF cleaner (because Wynns is a well known and respected company) removed the MAF and gave it a thorough clean, twice, and left it to dry out overnight before replacing. Result is the car now no longer hesitates and runs better than it has for many months, without jerking when accelerating, particularly from cold. Wish I had tried this months ago as it has absolutely transformed the car's performance back to what it used to be.
