Great Expectations
This film is flawed - yet like the original book's author those flaws cannot hide the sheer brilliance of the work. There are so many things to like - the famous opening sequence on the Kent marshes, the nightime capture of the fleeing convicts, Miss Havisham and her command that Estella "beggar" Pip, all the way through to Magwich's failed attempt to flee England - all these plus great performances from those in both large and small roles help make this a marvellous entertainment. Above all, though, the cinematography that effortlessly evokes mid 19th century London and Kent. Yes, flawed - but what work of true greatness isn't? After all, being flawed is the essence of being alive. And this film is certainly alive.

One very good reason to watch "My So-Called Life"
This was something new in tv when it first aired in the early 1990s. And given that it bit the dust after 19 episodes perhaps something too new for tv to handle. 12 years and countless new shows later perhaps we are all just a little bit too jaundiced to appreciate what this show has to offer - at times, watching it again, it is almost a bit twee. However, look closely and there are genuine reasons for all the excitement back then - a fine portrayal by Wilson Cruz of a gay teenager coming to terms with his sexuality, a convincing turn from Tom Irwin of a loving husband and father who despite his best intentions can't quite get over the urge to break away and "be himself" in work and love, but more than anything Claire Danes!! We are so used to older actors playing teenagers that the shock of realising that she actually was a contemporary of her character takes some getting used to - her performance is far and away the best thing about "My So-Called Life". It is so good as to be shocking - her physical acting is always perfect, her face always dynamic, her body seeming to be drawn-in in an effort not to explode into adulthood. In short - Claire Danes is sensational, and her portrayal of the occasionally annoying but always captivating Angela Chase is still a joy to behold 12 years on. Watch and be in awe!

Genius at work!
Fantastic music. Classic pop sensibilities filtered through a sharp 21st Century mind.
