Star! Julie Andrews
Good forgotten gem of a movie. Andrews plays the Star to the hilt. Daniel Massey (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) is brilliant as Noel Coward.
This was released about the same time as Funny Girl and came off worse at the box office - you know how they try and imitate a big hit in Hollywood. Sadly, if you read up about Gertrude Lawrence - she was a much ballsier woman than Andrews can ever play. She was a professor at Columbia University for the last few years of her life. She bought the story of The King & I to the attention of Rogers & Hammerstein and starred in the original Broadway show with an unknown Yul Brynner.
A long film at over two and a half hours, but a great way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon if you love a cheesy Hollywood musical!

THE STAR - BETTE DAVIS
Little known Bette Davis film that deals with the downward spiral of an ageing Oscar winning actress.
Good story with the part torn to pieces by Davis who got her 9th Academy Award nomination for playing Margaret Elliot, an award winning star who sees her beautiful things auctioned off in the beginning of the film. Her world unravels as she deals with a public arrest, free-loading relatives, shoplifting and a really bad screen test that was her last shot at a comeback. Interesting supporting cast, none who come close to Davis, despite her sometimes falling into a caricature of herself.
Leading man, Sterling Hayden is nice to look at but as charismatic as Weetabix. A young Natalie Wood plays her daughter, and there's a scene on a sailing boat that is a bit creepy given how Natalie died - especially as her character gets told she's "...a good sailor!" Great old 50's, black and white movie with an ageing star having the guts to play one on screen.
Comes with the original trailer and a 10 minute show about the film.

Man bag craziness
1 of 1 found this helpful I miss the days when a bloke could leave the house with no more than a jacket to store things in. These days with keys, wallet, phone, glasses & contact lens cases, eye drops, tissues...it goes on & on, we need a bag, but not something obvious. I was given a bag like this last Christmas but it wasn’t great quality so it didn’t last long. This bag however is great quality, robust leather with plenty of compartments - these can be confusing if you can’t remember where you stored stuff but it’s small enough to wear under a coat but has plenty of room for your essentials. Only drawback is the strap has left a black stain across the back of my t shirt, probably because I was sweating in the recent hot weather. Haven’t washed it yet so not sure if it will come out, but a good product nonetheless.
