Great Second Release
Mettle is a great followup to Drum, the first release from this obscure late 80's/early 90's band. The main difference here, I think, is the fact that Mettle is a bit more out-front, with louder arrangements and a slightly more vivid production job. The songs here still bear the Hugo Largo stamp and there are just as many "good ones" as there were on the first. I was surprised how much of this CD I still remembered. It had been about 18 years since I last listened to it regularly and when it started playing I instantly remember all the lyrics, the song order, and the chord changes of each song. If this CD were released today it would still sound fresh and cutting-edge. If you want more (assuming you have this one and Drum), look for singer Mimi Goese's '98 release, Float (she is billed simply as "Mimi" on this one). It definitely has a strong Hugo Largo feel to it. I hear she's also coming out with something new soon, possibly entitled Persephone.

Definitely one of their best
Pod is a great CD from The Breeders. Their next one - Last Splash - may be more popular but that's mainly because it's a bit m ore accessible and perhaps mainstream, though "mainstream" doesn't really apply here. I listened to all the Breeders CD's again recently, including their latest (Mountain Battles), and found Pod to be the most thoroughly listenable and consistent of them all. That may be because it also sounds (to my ears, at least) the most like The Pixies of all their releases. The main drawback to Pod is that Kelly Deal was not yet a part of The Breeders and her absence is definitely felt, though the Pod lineup is great, too.

One of a Kind
One of a kind film. An entertaining, funny, joyful, interesting movie, a record of what the leading edge of music and art culture was up to in the 80's, and still fresh and forward looking today. More current and fresh than most new movies. Beautiful to look at and listen to.
