Don't use Duracell rechargeable batteries, or the battery compartment will jam
I had an issue with the battery compartment jamming when using 8 x Duracell rechargable batteries. After considerable effort and with some difficulty, I have finally managed to extract the battery compartment and batteries. I have also identified the problem! Once I had removed the battery compartment and batteries I decided to test the battery compartment mechanism without any batteries present. The result was that it operated as it should. I then tried fitting standard non-rechargeable batteries, again the mechanism operated fine. I then re-inserted x 8 Duracell rechargeable batteries, however this time it was clear that the battery compartment was going to get firmly stuck again, so I did not attempt to push the compartment fully home. I finally tried fitting x 8 Energizer rechargeable batteries and on this occasion the mechanism operated fine. My conclusion was that the Duracell batteries were causing the problem. When I measured the circumference of both the Duracell & Energizer batteries, I discovered that the circumference of each Duracell battery was slightly greater i.e. by more than 1mm. It therefore appears that with all 8 Duracell batteries in place their increase in girth is enough to cause the battery compartment to jam and then fail to release. The solution, therefore, is NOT to use Duracell rechargeable batteries in the camera's battery compartment.
