Various Artists - Concert for George
This is probably one of the most unevenly played double CDs in history. Disc 1 will probably get one curious play by most timid western ears while Disc 2 records a remarkable event in honour of a remarkable man. Joe Brown in particular will never seem the same again after this.

The birth of Scandanavian-noir
Before "The killing" and its Scandanavian-noir bedmates, there was Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo. Before Larsson and Nesbo there was Henning Mankell. And before Mankell there was Sjowall and Wahloo. A husband-and-wife team writing (alternate chapters! between the mid-60s and mid-70s, they invented the Swedish police procedural, producing work as dark as anything that came later. Amazingly contemporary - no mobile phones, but otherwise there's little to give away the 40 years that have passed since publication. And before Sjowall and Wahloo, there was Ed McBain and the 87 Precinct so they learnt from the best.

As good as ever
I bought my first Playfair Cricket Annual in 1967, so this was the 50th consecutive year. Is there a product with a stronger image? A million facts crammed into a tiny package, it's the anorak's bible.
