Perfect for workouts!
1 of 1 found this helpful This is exactly what I needed to kick my running into higher gear! Fantastic device for workout use, which is why I bought it. And it's also great as a standard music & podcast player. I use the radio too but it seems to use the battery faster. But the tuner is better than the one on my previous cheapo mp3 player.
Here are some tips I learned for using the 6th gen Nano as a workout device. To track miles run most accurately, clip it to your waist or somewhere else on your trunk. I wore it in a watchband for some workouts and noticed a drop in distance accuracy. Also, set the Nano so that when you double-click the "wake" button, it will pause your workout. This is really handy for stoplights, drink breaks, etc. Then you don't have to mess with the touch screen with sweaty fingers as much (which can be difficult - it doesn't work as well when my fingers are sweaty. And I am still wondering how it will work when I'm wearing gloves in the winter).
I'm not sure I would choose this model if I just wanted a really good music player. The screen is so tiny that it's difficult to navigate through the music to find what you want. My husband has an Ipod Touch which has basically taken over the function of a laptop in his life, and he loves it for music too.
I haven't loaded photos on it, and don't see why I would want to, with such a tiny screen. But again, the tiny screen is a huge plus for my purposes (running) - because this device is so incredibly lightweight and non-intrusive.
8GB is plenty of room for me, since I have my music stored on my laptop and just create a playlist to sync to my Nano, which I change up from time to time. Right now I have over 1,000 songs in that playlist, which only takes up 5.24 GB. I also sync maybe 8 or 10 podcasts, which totals less than 1G. So, I definitely wouldn't want to try to store all my music on an 8GB Nano, but for portability of some music for workout purposes, it's plenty of space.
I should add that I've only used two other mp3 players in my life. One was a Samsung Yepp in the '90s (so I think it had like 64MB capacity), and the other was an "IQ Sound" that my husband bought a few years ago for $30 and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. So I can't compare the Nano to other high-quality mp3 players. I didn't even really research other brands because after switching to a MacBook last year, I'm really happy with Apple products. But, among the Ipods, I feel confident I chose the right model for my situation.

For pure reading pleasure, this is pretty near perfect.
11 of 11 found this helpful Love it! For pure reading pleasure, I definitely prefer this to any color tablet. The e-ink is so clear and easy on the eyes, even in bright sunlight.
The experimental browser is a nice bonus, and with the free 3G, this proved really useful on a recent road trip when we needed to use Google Maps for directions on the freeway. We also enjoyed having children's books and the "read-to-me" function for our kids' use on that same road trip.
Downsides - the browser can be frustrating and slow to work with, esp. since you have no touch screen or mouse to navigate with. But the 5-way controller is a decent alternative.
There's no backlight for night-time reading, so you need a reading light (clip-on works great). Also, we would have liked the speakers to be louder for our kids' use in the car. But, it has a headphone jack too.
There is a microphone on this device, but there isn't any use for it yet. I think it would be awesome if Amazon would add a "voice memo" feature.
For just plain reading, this device is fantastic. Again, I much prefer it to a color, LCD-screen tablet. It is a much more soothing device for reading. It also can be helpful for basic on-the-go Web browsing. And if you have Web-based email and a Web-based calendar, it keeps them handy too.
I've enjoyed the ability to highlight and share passages on Facebook.
The keyboard is surprisingly easy to use, and the 5-way controller is a decent way to navigate around a page, though not as speedy as a mouse or a touch-screen would be.
I love how light and sleek it feels in my hands - or hand. It's very easy to read one-handed, or just set it on my leg and read hands-free (except for page turns, though you could use the 'read-to-me' function and eliminate page turns too).
And of course, it's awesome having so many books in one place, and tons more quickly & easily accessible through Amazon (a huge amount of public domain books including loads of classics are free!)
A feature I am excited about but haven't tried is the ability to send your own documents (.pdf, .doc, etc.) to your Kindle. For instance, I'm a songwriter, so i could store my song charts on this and bring it to performances. Or you could store recipes, instruction manuals, and other reference materials that you want to keep portable.
I also haven't tried loading mp3s onto the device, so can't comment on that. And I've never used a Nook beyond 10 minutes examining one at a B&N store once, so I can't comment on how Kindle & Nook compare.
I love the size - I can't imagine trying to read a book on a smart-phone-sized device; and I had been using the Kindle app on my laptop. The Kindle Keyboard screen is just the right size for readability and portability.
All in all, I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone who loves to read!

Exactly what I was looking for! Folds up...
Exactly what I was looking for! Folds up so small and lightweight for taking to gigs, but set up with my guitar in it, it seems plenty sturdy for my purposes.
