An iconic design, ease of use and amazing value for money!
I brought the Canon AE-1 Program camera back in 1980 with one of my first payslips, from my first proper job. I remember at that time time discussing with the sales assistant which camera to go for and it was narrowed down to the AE-1 Program and the A1. I bought the AE-1 program due to the cost difference. This camera served me well for many years until I misplaced it at a wedding party. All of the photos I own from the birth of my children through their schooling and many holidays here and abroad have been taken with the AE-1 Program. After the loss of this camera I have been through a few compact digital cameras until I started browsing the internet and started researching into digital SLR cameras having regained an interest in photography. I note that the digital shots were hardly ever printed It was only by reading about the features of the newer digital SLR's that I discovered the technical advantages of 35mm film cameras over digital photography ie relative low cost of a full frame camera and superior picture quality up to a number of mega pixels. I had never realised what an icon, design looks wise and technical innovation wise, the AE-1 Program was. With eagerness I searched for the AE-1 Prog and then thought what the hell and looked also for the A1 itself, which I had not originally been able to afford back in 1980. I eventually bought both cameras from seperate ebay sellers. I particularly like the solid feel and build quality of these cameras. The program capabiliites of these cameras make them a breeze to use. You have to get used to inserting the film if you have never used a 35mm camera before, but this is not hard to learn. Many will tell you of their dislike of having to hand in the film for developing and the waiting and the pain of having to pay for the prints. However i find it a relatively small price to pay. I have found no problems with handing the film in one day and collcting it the next day (a little searching on the internet also shows that mail order still exists). The cost of developing 36 (6x4) prints was £7.99 and included the prints on a CD and the negatives. The quality of the photos and the prints of my first effort were to me impressive. I can now have the pleasure of knowing that some of these can be blown up to poster size without deteriation in quality if I choose(an distinct advantage over digital SLR pictures). The actual lenses for these 35mm cameras are relatively cheap and plentiful. The A1 came with a 50mm lens and I already had a 35mm and a zoom lens from the original AE-1 Prog that I owned. The A1 camera and its lens that I have brought were in very good condition and for the cost of circa £60 cost is astounding value. A similar spec digital SLR will cost umpteen times more. Luckily the camera does not suffer the infamous Canon Cough that these are prone to. If you are in possession of a canon camera with this fault I note that you can have it cured from ebayers offering this service. I still find that looking and holding this camera makes me wonder in awe at its beauty. There is so much more to learn in its use other than the 5 program modes. If you want to truly learn about photography and are willing to practice then this is the camera for you. If you are into the ease of the hit and miss of digital shots, knowing that you can delete shots not wanted, then this may not be your cup of tea. But at this price it is worth having as an additional 35mm film camera.
