Patient by Ben Watt
Ben Watt is one half of the pop duo "Everything but the girl". I had never heard of them, being far too old. However in May 2009 I was diagnosed with Churg Strauss Syndrome, the same extremely rare disease Ben Watt was diagnosed with in 1992 on the eve of his tour of the USA. He wrote this book about his time in hospital when he was desperately ill and the illness was so obscure and rare that it took two and a half months and many surgical operations before he was diagnosed . I was recommended to read the book.I am very glad I did as it was, in a very quiet and low-key way quite inspirational. His journey through this painful and isolating illness was depicted with courage and wry humour.It is very well-written. He brushed with death and survived . His gratitude to be alive and with hope for the future, despite major changes to his body and his life-style shines through. He has carried on writing and performing and living as normal life as possible I have discovered. I recommend this book to anyone with Churg Strauss Syndrome in particular but to everyone who is interested in well-written, unusual books about survival and the ability of human beings to rise aboove all sorts of adversity
