Good Stuff
This doesn't seem as smelly as solvent based paints used to be. It goes on cream-coloured, which is great because you can see exactly what you have painted and where you missed. It also helps you to get the thickness consistent. Then it turns a really brilliant white as it dries. It gives a good shine and the rain just rolls off it.

It's a Lemon!
Having been impressed with previous Baofeng products I was excited to see they had apparently brought out a "DMR" radio. So I purchased this one, solely for monitoring my local DMR repeater.
BIG MISTAKE!! From my point of view it is a complete waste of money. Why? Two reasons...
Firstly, it does NOT include the AMBE CODEC, so although the green light comes on when receiving DMR signals from any other make of DMR, there is absolutely no audio. This radio will NOT communicate with "regular" DMR radios or repeaters, only with other DM-5R's.
Secondly, its is NOT TDMA. When transmitting, the TX carrier is on all the time, so it blocks both time slots at once, and doesn't achieve the energy saving of a real DMR.
Baofeng appear to have disowned this device, saying it is unsuitable for ham radio applications. A firmware upgrade to add the AMBE codec is available from another supplier, but at £10 plus £7.50 postage, this makes the radio as expensive as some of the much better makes, and is a lot of hassle. The update claims to make the DM-5R into a DM-5R PLUS, but neither radio does TDMA, so it would only be usable as a receiver, unless you want to make a lot of enemies.
Other than the useless "DMR" feature, this is just another dual band radio at twice the price. It is difficult to find adaptors for the reversed SMA antenna connector, and some of the radio's setup can only be accessed by purchasing a separate programming lead.

Useful Device
The device seems robustly constructed and mine will deliver over 80 mA into a 12v battery in good October sunshine, with the device behind a clear glass window. I have no doubt this would be higher on a summer day. Charge current is only a couple of milliamps in dull weather. That's better than no charge at all, but don't expect to charge a flat battery in dull weather! The fact that it comes with both cigarette lighter plug AND croc-clip leads is very useful. Both of these include fuses, which is a nice safety feature. The blue LED flashes even in dim light, but under those conditions there isn't enough voltage to charge a 12v battery. It would be enough to charge a lower voltage battery in dull conditions, although it may need a current limiting resistor. A previous reviewer suggested there might be "drawback" (reverse current flow) at night, but there is definitely none.
