EMG ALX Alexi Laiho Signature Guitar Pickup Set Black
29 Nov, 2018
Weird and awesome!
This system is an interesting concept. It's a very underpowered passive humbucker that's being preamped to cram all sorts of customizable gain into it, in order to boost the sonic capabilities without it being physically overwound (hot) and to add additional customization (boost) options. The result is added sustain, harmonic response, and strong voicing, from a distinctly neutral and toothless pup. A Very unusual and unique package, but amazingly effective. This system is not a replacement for an active system, but rather, a passive setup on steroids. the price-point is fantastic for everything you're getting (the preamp can be used with any other passive pickup, so it's potential future use is unlimited), the fit and finish is premium, and the practical result is loads of fun! The only caveat I've run into is that wiring everything correctly was very confusing and difficult in a guitar stock wired with a coil-tapped passive bridge bucker and coil-tapped, single-spaced, passive neck bucker (3 pos. switch). Out of impatience, I gave up on doing it "right" and just deleted the neck pup and coil tap pot, so I could get to jamming. That was as easy as it gets!
