Recommended, but marked down because this edition has no historical map
Reprint of the 1991 Ian Allan edition, this Booklaw Publications edition (hardcover RRP £16.99) has the chapters on the city's railway history, its stations, lines, depots, branches and loco-building. Obviously the author has very good knowledge of the area (including Leith and the "sub") and describes it very well, but there is no overall historical map. It may be just my copy but it looks as though Booklaw have left out the map that appears to have been in the end-papers of the Ian Allan edition. This is a major deficiency. Either you need your own map (Cobb Railways of Gt Britain, Sheet 545 is ideal) or find an edition with the map included. It is certainly worth this extra effort as the author has some very interesting points to make about the loss of most of Edinburgh's suburban services, and what might have been had they been managed with more foresight. The book predates the reopening of the Bathgate line to Glasgow and the proposed reopening of the line to Tweeddale.

A bargain
To be able to buy such an important and beautifully produced book for a price that includes P&P is bargain. Published in 1985 it is still topical, and the text is much easier to read than more recent books of this type.
