Cold-Hearted Rake - Mass Market Paperback By Kleypas, Lisa - VERY GOOD
    20 Sep, 2021
    Disappointing and disturbing content
Abusive and denigrative characters made this book virtually unreadable. Admittedly, the book predates #MeToo, but misogyny is misogyny and this book wasn't written in 1817 (though you might think so from the content.) The problem is not the writer's craft; she is a fine writer. But her male protagonist is cruel, dismissive, and - realistically speaking - unredeemable. I have read other reviews of this book that point up this same flaw, so I hardly think it is something only I noticed. Many romance fiction readers, including me, like rogues and rascals. But the romantic lead in this book is predatory and cruel, qualities Kleypas seems to legitimize in ways that make no sense at all. I can't compare the character to others in Kleypas' other novels, since - for me - this was the first and last of her books I will ever read.
Victoria's Spymasters: Empire and Espionage by Professor Wade, Stephen: Used

An invaluable resource for British espionage in the 1800s
I write historical fiction and needed some books to fill out my knowledge of spies and spy craft in Britain in the 1800s. I guessed that this book would meet my research needs - which it did - but hadn't imagined it would also be somewhat of a page turned. Beautifully written start to finish. For anyone who's curious about the birth of His Majesty's Secret Service, this book gives you all the fascinating people and events that created the institution long, long before James Bond.
All souls trilogy: The book of life by Deborah Harkness (Paperback / softback)
    01 Dec, 2020
    Glad to have read this
As an historian and scholar, my enjoyment of the All Souls Trilogy should have been based on its very rich historical detail, as well as the evocative handling of Oxford and the academic environment. Actually, though (and while I savored the accuracy and scope of Harkness' settings), it was the story itself that kept my interest from start to finish. Within the fantastic world of vampires, witches, and demons, the characters' humanity is preserved, while their actions are dictated, in the final analysis, by relatable human traits such as love, jealousy, power lust, and an informing sense of curiosity about what they (we) are and how we (they) came to be.
