German Generals of World War II: As I Saw Them by F. W. Von Mellenthin 1977 HC

Fantastic book
It has unique insights into various German generals who aren't exactly household names but whose accomplishments were amazing. The author served these men in a staff capacity and had the opportunity to observe not only their leadership skills but their approaches to tactical, strategic, and logistics problems. Absolutely a must have for any serious library.

Great movie filled with brillant performances
They don't make movies like this anymore. The eternal problems of human relationships never change. That's why King Lear is as new today as when Shakespeare penned it. This movie deals not only with familial relationships but societal and courtship customs. All the nonsense about empowered women today is just claptrap. The same problems and solutions existed centuries ago, they were just more honest about it. The brilliant performances highlight these issues. The plot, pacing and transformations engross and captivate. The power of love is demonstrated as well as scorn. The ability to learn and grow when driven by rejection and betrayal is also brilliantly handled and lessons taught, something Hollywood doesn't do today, it preaches from a soapbox. A period piece this movie fascinates in all respects. I can't speak highly enough of a perfectly selected cast of actors. I cannot think of anything bad to say except that its in B&W for those who demand color. A great movie that will never age.
DEMAGOGUES, VOLUME 2 OF BLOODSTAINS, AN EPIC HISTORY OF POLITICS By Howard Ray

Great book about the results of extremist and demonizing your opponents
I found this to be an excellent book covering areas that recent historians have sought to revise or gloss over in the name of revisionism. It is valuable because it demonstrates that extremists sought to eliminate the chance for compromise or understanding by casting issues in the most extreme moral terms depicting one side as the "side serving Satan." This was deliberate as symbolism became more important than reality or their consequences. The Sumner beating is an example of an outrageous action that provoked an violent response, though justified. Much of what we see today occurred during the Missouri compromise and the period after. Today we see the divsions protrayed as simply slavery with no discussion of the expansion of the federal government's power nor the use of tarriffs to exploit the south for the benefit of a special interest class in the north. Sound familiar? Then the northern radicals had no concept of the fire they were playing with, they never did and 700,000 dead resulted-the tolls are actually higher because of civilian deaths especially among blacks, whom the north didn't support yet destroyed their possibility of earning a living by waging war on the southern civilians. Recommend this book highly. No doubt heads are exploding in faculty lounges. Someone actually did produce a book going back to the archives and quoting the speeches and letters of those who fomented war.
