A FUNNY, GRUBBY MUSICAL WESTERN
I have always loved this musical despite it receiving fairly negative reviews upon cinematic release in 1969. It could be called an 'anti-musical', as the two male leads cannot sing; but I feel this adds charm, reveals more of their characters; and therefore creates an empathy with the audience.
Harve Presnall as 'Rotten Luck Willy' is tremendous (what a voice), and the all-male chorus is sublime. Highlight of the movie: the 'Maria' sequence. It is one of the best performed songs ever featured in an American film musical.
