    Hotpoint AQGMD129 washer dryer
I bought this machine because the dryer on my old washer dryer stopped working. After looking on e-bay for a replacement heating element, I took a deep breath, embraced my mechanical incompetence, and realised it was finally time to buy a new machine. Putting in a sneaky last minute bid [of a maximum of £317.00] for the Hotpoint was fun, but I had to arrange delivery myself. I paid £100 for delivery from the North of England to London (one of the quotes was £500) and then decided to install it myself (not recommended but I was bored and wanted to see if it worked). Installation was interesting, slightly scary (having to shut off the mains supply to the house completely) but ultimately not too difficult. You should on no account try to install the machine yourself unless you are a qualified technician as it is potentially very dangerous. I was foolish. The worst part was removing the retaining (carriage) bolts from the back of the machine which stop the drum being damaged in transit. That took about 30 minutes as I had no spanner. There followed a candlelit farce as I turned off the mains supply to fit the machine to the (now safely off) electricity supply. There is only one incoming (cold water) hose, and one outgoing hose coming from the machine. Simple, but check for leaks on the first cycle. The machine is quiet, very easy to use and extremely good quality. On a superficial level, it will enhance the appearance of any kitchen, even if you have a radiantly lavish kitchen. I recommend reading the washing guide. Perhaps best of all, it has a 15 minute quick wash function which is a lot more useful than you might think, and very ecologically prudent (it is for refreshing lightly used things such as bath towels with a little powder and some fabric softener). Getting a major load of clothes washed in 15 minutes is quite something. Then, a simple twist of the dial, the dryer kicks in, and your clothes are clean and dry enough to put in the cupboard (or they can be made dry enough to iron or dry enough to put on a hanger). There are loads of wash selections. The usual major wash choices. There are particularly good drying choices which are very easy to use. You can change the 'presets' in the sense that you can save to memory your own specific temperature and spin choices which is handy and easy to do, again easier than you might think (select your own parameters and then press for example M1. There are 4 memory button presets. The built in presets cover just about everything so you probably won't need the memory settings anyway. It looks fantastic (with a cool looking backlit digital display) and in a nutshell, it is an order of magnitude better than I thought it would be. My clothes are wonderfully clean fresh and dry. For those with families it has a safety lock. As of 1 September 2008, these Hotpoints are going from between approximately £395.00 [$790.00] to £550.00 ($1100.00) in the shops in the UK. I spent £317.00 to buy the machine on e-bay which was in fact the maximum bid I had made. I lost my nerve slightly and bid with 2 minutes to go (which caused bidding rises and accordingly I should have waited until the last 30 seconds to bid). If I had known how good the machine was I would have bid £350 max. A truly excellent product. I wish you the same good fortune and fun in your search for a washer dryer as I am grateful to say I have had. Best of luck :)

A Triumph of Art and Science
I needed a low cost mobile phone fast (broke my iPhone in a fit of curiosity). When the SE W205 arrived, I was surprised how compact and well designed it looked. It looks like an expensive phone, but it is not a phone for sausage fingered primitives. It is a very compact little thing. The sliding mouthpiece is cool (in a trekky way). First impressions? For under £40...a great phone. Sound quality is world class from the built in FM radio (which uses the headphone lead as its aerial). Great radio engineering in this phone picks up powerful signals from nearby stations...though there is no AM band which is a pity. And the Walkman sound quality is top drawer as well, of which more later. Mechanical and electrical engineering is impressive...(this phone is SMALL) and it has a 'cool' factor but the main problem with it is the Walkman feature. If you buy the phone, you are then going to need a compatible data cable. Fine. But loading songs from your PC onto the phone is not actually that easy... (unless you are a technical anorak). I tried moving songs from a Sony Walkman Harddisk portable player onto this phone and had real problems with it even though both products are made by Sony (lesson here for Sony is to reduce the bizarrely wide range of products and focus on one or two top products as Apple have done). A sprawling range of products that are not even compatible with each other will lead to losses instead of profits. However, overall...I was seriously impressed with it. It is unbelievable good value for money (if you can get it for under £40). It has a great battery life...is really well designed...and subject to the music loading caveat, it is very easy to use. A triumph of art and science.

    Massive Capacity. Windows or Mac.
Sleek compact unit. Easy plug and play for Windows or Mac. One OR the other. Just drag and drop massive files. Takes a couple of hours to copy half a Terabyte (a truly massive amount of data...probably what the Library of Congress collates in several months). Smaller files (a few hundred GB down to KB sized files) are more or less instantly transferred onto this external drive. You can then delete them from your laptop etc and free up plenty of space. Opening up a laptop to upgrade the hard drive cam be tricky unless you are an electronic engineer. You may also void your warranty. So getting an external hard drive like this makes sense for a lot of people. It is an upgrade without the hassle. Highly recommended for use with Apple machines too. I use it to backup a database that was taking up HD space on a laptop. Brilliant little plug and play hard drive. Massive 2TB capacity. Cannot imagine a more useful or stylish external drive. Love it.
