Classic ghost stories, masterfully read
I don't know if David Collings was a long-time admirer of M.R. James's ghost stories, or if he was just such a professional that he could imbue any text he read with energy and conviction, but he certainly reads as if he were completely familiar with these tales and had thought deeply about them. As a narrator, he speaks very gracefully and with great expression, but when he starts to read dialogue, you can hear the actor take over. Male and female, old and young, elevated or rustic, he provides a unique voice for every character in the story. It's hard to imagine him just sitting sedately behind a microphone as he read these stories; it's as if he's actually performing every role. I don't own too many audiobooks, but this is one that I'll be listening to regularly for years to come.
