EF 28-105 zoom lense
This is now my 'walking around' lense. I was undecided between the 28-105 and the 28-135. The choice came down to cost in the end though the reviews seemed to favor the 105. In general I am more than pleased with my choice. I still hanker after an L series lense for the step up in optics but this is a very pleasing everyday lense and more than adequate for the casual or amateur photographer like me. I was concerned about the weight with the Canon D60 which is already a substantial body but actually it's no problem. The feel of this lense is solid build quality and the optical performance seems to be a little more than entry level. The D60 at 6 meg lacks the pixel density of the newer bodies but the results thus far are soft in general but often pleasing. Professional online reviews of this lense suggest that this lense works well with the smaller CMOS sensor of the D60. The received wisdom is to go for the one with the yellow word 'macro' on the focusing ring rather than the one with the yellow flower symbol. This is because the later lense has a seven blade diaphragm rather than the earlier five. I'll continue to save for primes for all the best work I hope to do but for 'snapping' it works. I think this is a very satisfying step up from a kit lense. The consensus seems to be, you only get what you pay for, but I think it is more than possible to get the best from this lense with a little practice. I may become a better photographer through working with rather than relying on my kit.

Nikon D80
This is a remakable camera. Moved to this camera from the Canon D60 and more than happy with the move to Nikon. This is a lovely camera, offering all the control I could wish for. The step up to 10 meg from 6 meg is noticable in resolution and scope and the smaller size and weight a plus. This fits into your hand like a glove and feels natural and intuitive in use. For those of us who work a few years behind the leading edge of the digital revolution to make the kit afforable this is a wonderful camera. Beautifully built and wonderfully flexible and useable. Chose this primarily because it was the first camera in the range which offered camera based focusing of the non (S) lenses. Perhaps look for a D90 if you can stretch to that but certainly look for an 80 if that's more within your budget. Beginning to build a kit of lenses to work with this body and finding a satisfying range of lenses available used. Using the website http://www.kenrockwell.com/ from Ken Rockwell to help with a professionally informed choice. Go out and get one, you'll not be disappointed

Budget price motherboard
Bought this to rebuild a desktop with damaged cpu socket. With a i7 processor taken from the old system it flys along. Eventually choose this over the other similar priced boards because it was genuine intel. For under £30 it was a brilliant buy. Still pleasantly surprised by the speed with 8gb ram. Very pleased!
