cant take the heat

when i used the first switch, I had a hard time tinning the solder pads, and then when I was successful the switch body got all rubbery from the heat, when it cooled the toggle had no feel to it, i use a radio shock solder station with temp control. the second switch i soldered the wire right onto the pad without tinning, the switch body got soft but hardened right back up as it cooled and the toggle still works.
