    Simply a dreamy lens!
This lens is an absolute must. I managed to find it for £265.00 (at an ebay shop) a couple of months ago, which makes it a genuine bargain. The macro facility really does get you right in close without having to be right next to the subject. 5 inches is the closest you can get and still maintain focus. Focussing is all internal. The f2.8 feature means low light is not such a problem. You can still achieve a decent shutter speed in low light however a tripod is needed when zooming right in and hand held. I haven't yet got a macro flash but I am sure it would add another dimension. Build quality is very good. It is also an excellent lens for portrait work and the background blur (bokeh) is sooo rich and creamy it is a must! Focus is swift enough but the best feature is the sheer sharpness and detail available. It goes without saying I would strongly recommend this lens as it opens up a whole new world. SAVE UP AND BUY IT!

    Best Landscape Lens?
I love this lens! I bought it for both Landscape work and Portrait shots. This lens is light enough and small enough to fit neatly into a camera bag without becoming some sort of workout when walking with it (unlike the much larger and more expensive f/2.8 versions) It is very sharp, especially given the right amount of light and therefore a faster shutter speed. I have also taken 3 minute long exposures that are razor sharp at f/11-16. F/22 starts to get softer at 200mm, but there isn't any other zoom that I know of that would be any sharper. A camera hood is a good idea with this lens as the front element is quite close to the end of the lens and stray light does easily enter it. The good news is the hood is reversible so takes up as little space as possible. The zoom and focus rings are smooth and steady, the autofocus on my 5D mk II is very quick. Many people feel they 'need' a faster f/ stop and think that f/4.0 will not give enough background blur or bokeh. I find it fine if your subject is quite close and there is a bit of distance between your subject and the background. Bokeh is pleasingly buttery and the subject is focused nicely. When zooming you lose depth of field, so where a 100mm lens might be fine at f/2.8, the 70-200 at full zoom needs that bit more dof to keep your subject in focus acroos most of the face. Obviously for landscape work, the faster f stops are not really needed and f/ 11-16 is fine. I know a lot of people like the IS version of this lens, which if I had the money I would buy, but for a saving of £350-£400, it is quite a heavy price to pay. In short, a versatile, super sharp, light weight and relatively compact zoom lens with outstanding optical performance that is a joy to use. Oh and it won't completely break the bank, just temporarily disable it :) Go and get one! Oh, and if you want to do long exposures with it, I would recommend a tripod collar for extra stability. Don't recommend the expensive Canon ones, a cheaper Canon style will do fine.

    Oldschool sense
Having been recommended the 35-70 contax zeiss, I had a play with one on my 5D mkII and was blown away by the image quality and micro contrast. Super sharp when properly adapted and 'tweaked' to the body. I got a specific contax Yashica to Canon adaptor and added tape to adjust. A rare and rather impressive lens that despite the lack of autofocus or indeed focus points, is still simply untouchable for the price. I primarily use mine between f/8.0 and f/11.0 for image sharpness. F/3.4 is not the best in quality as is f/22.0. There is a great macro function at 35mm only but you have to get VERY close to the subject for extreme close ups.
