A sharp slap in the face of political correctness
Scum is one of a rare breed of movie. The type of movie that actually makes the person watching it think about how wrong a system put in place to help people and reform them can become as horrific as the original crimes that many of the criminals in Scum have already performed.
No one is spared judgement in this tale. The prisoners are loathed for their previous and current actions, as the people placed to watch over them ignore their duty and merely allow their charges to run rampant amongst themselves, only interviening when it will suit their own purposes or to avenge themselves of (mostly) imagined insults.
Both versions of Scum have a largely documentary feel to them, adding to the realism of the movie's subjects and making the audience uncomfortable and preventing them from falling into the standard routein of "Ohh cool fights, I want some popcorn."
If you're interested in buying Scum, I would suggest taking the time to purchase the special two-disc edition. For only two or three pounds more, you can see both versions of the movie and compare them both together.
