And Speak He Always Will! (A MUST READ!)
This book is an indulgence in itself for any true lover of life, truth and laughter. Only a Satanist can truly grasp why Anton LaVey is called the “Good Doctor” within the Satanic community. The back shows the man himself. He looks so happy. So full of contentment, honesty and life. Fire! The man was fire. It coursed through his veins. It must have. He doesn’t look like he’s in his 60s there! He looks 40 tops! But that secret might be what’s given in Chapter 41: “What’s New.”
The book begins with two knock-out essays towards “The God of Assholes” and the sanctimonious lot whom have dug their own graves with the shovel of stupidity by exasperating what they hate most by blowing it up into something it would have never been in the first place without their help. That is, of course, all the nonexistent Devil’s good works:
“Soon your children will come home walking in the front door with a Satanic Bible in one hand and a CD of Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain the other. Then, you’ll know you’re in real trouble. You wanted Hell. I’ll give you Hell. It won’t be fun. The Devil’s Plan may not be your plan. Your Apocalypse is HERE. YOU brought it about. Take it. Suffer. It’s all yours.” – Page 7
He gives me chills of joy, I tell you. He was pure power and strength. A demon laughing with a whole heart. But what else could be expected from such a life-affirming revolutionary with such an incredible sense of humour? There’s one thing he said that I don’t understand, though:
“Others cannot and should not be funny.” – Page 8
Yet he pokes a great deal of brilliant, sardonic fun at rabble who take themselves far too seriously. It’s a very important part of his writings and I love it. Like these two maxims for instance - both witty and painfully true:
“Those who are humourless should not be taken seriously. They take themselves so seriously, they leave no room for others to do likewise.” – Page 165
“It’s a mistake for a shallow person to try to display another, more serious side of his or her nature. It invariably comes out so clichéd and trite as to be laughable.” – Page 171
Also, he himself was VERY funny, but, of course in the traditional sense of a man with a good, strong head on his shoulders who knew how to get a chuckle. “The Nose Bubble” is a riot! And this, for example, from “Sleepers, Orphans and Scarcity” had me in stitches, but you’d have to read the entire essay to really know why:
“Even a broken clock is accurate at least twice a day. So, save your broken clock. The time on its face, however you set it, should let you know when to polish your shoes. If you don’t wear shoes; brush your teeth. If you have no teeth have sex with a senior citizen, because there’s many a good ride in an old Packard.” – 42
The man was hilarious! It comes out in all his writings, especially in Satan Speaks! That’s only ONE of the reasons, however, why this book is valuable for a lifetime of reading. You can always go back to it for the more than entertaining tales that he accumulated over the decades of his life and the cutting-edge insights which only an inexorably reflective and contemplative, superhuman mind like his could have gotten out of them. He was generous enough to pass on his wisdom for all who cared and were strong enough for it. The man was a GENIUS! From religion, to music, to fashion, to writing, to inventiveness, to crime, to progress, to the morbidity of the mob’s masochism and viciousness: it's all his target.
