The Negro Motorist Green-Book: 1940 Facsimile Edition (Paperback or Softback)
    12 May, 2021
    Memory Travels
This little book gives us a look into an era that is gone and still with us. A bit of history showing another part of American culture and American economy many of us were not even aware existed. Names that might be familiar, but not understood how they related to our history of the races. It identifies areas of cities that were once vibrant centers of Negro life, now gone or changed. One can read these entries and if you are familiar with the city visualize what it might have been like. Too, if you live in or near some of the places you can visit the addresses and see what is there now and contemplate the changes which have taken place.
Paper : Paging Through History by Mark Kurlansky (2016, Hardcover)
    29 Jun, 2016
    Paper's Place in our lives
Such a common article in our lives, yet without it life would be so much harder. Kurlansky does not talk so much on how to make paper, but what to do with it. Yes, some paper technology is there, but so is art, literature, politics, history and the paper that made it all possible. There is a great deal of backstory and trivia here, but this is what makes the book so compelling. How people used paper in different ways to express ideas, thoughts and concepts. Even different papers are used to convey different meanings within any given discipline. This book is best read with its twin by Nicholas Basbanes, also titled Paper. Both will give you a through history of paper from pulp to final use. They are both worth one's time to read and if there is a criticism to be made here, it is they seem to end too quickly.
