4TB Western Digital WD My Cloud MIRROR 4 TB External Hard Drive WDBZVM0040JWT

Nice way to extend backup capacity.
This is not something I would try to boot my PC off of. Initial setup showed around 40Mbps which I didn't think was too bad. I have a 1Gbps network so I was trying to understand why I was only getting 40% of capacity when nothing else was running on the network. It was not easy to setup. The user interface is quite strange. No central control panel where you can perform everything you want. I can understand this during initial setup but once you finally get it up and running you use different programs for monitoring and setting configurations for the cloud, backups, syncing, and connecting. Something strange happened next. The cloud slowed down to where I was getting mostly less than 10mbps and rarely getting as much as 17. I reinstalled and tried everything I could think of but nothing helped but in WD defense after about 2 weeks I think I have finally confirmed a thought that during syncing few files are actually being transferred since most have not changed. But to me, this still didn't make sense because I should see no or little transfers until the process hits a file that changed and then I should see a jump in throughput while transferring the file. While I did see this behavior, I only saw small rises in rates, never near what I originally was seeing. To stop the confusion I kept suspending the sync operation, playing instead with the strait backups. During all this I picked up a second WD cloud for cheap. This time I set it up with RAID0 instead of RAID1 as I did for the first. But again I saw nowhere near twice the speed of what I saw initially with the first cloud. Since I had all this space now, I decided to reconfigure everything. I swapped out 2 of the drives in the EX2 with two 4tb drives from my PC. I paired up the two 2tb drives from the EX2 with one in the PC and set them up as RAID5. Both Clouds were set up with RAID0. The EX2 now had 8 TB while the other had 4 and a 5tb Seagate USB external drive as its backup. This is where things really went bad. I had read in one review that the USB ports were true USB ports as you could attach them to a hub therefore extending your USB ports. This was a main reason I bought the WD over others as my PC has recently popped up with notifications that I exceeded the maximum supported. This error is extremely dangerous and if YOU see it disconnect the extra connection as it corrupts things all over your machine. I didn't know this until to late as I assumed the PC was smart enough to suspend one USB for another while one is not in use. Not so. I plugged a USB from one of the clouds into the back of one of my monitors which has a USB hub. A few minutes later a popup notification comes up stating the USB is not supported and to disconnect it. But the pop up comes too late and things have gone bad. How bad, you don't know. I should mention now that you want to turn on the notifications in the cloud web page. But when you do, note that the configure link turns on next to the button. Hit the the link and notice that you have to enter your email address. This through me because during all the setup and after, you are always being asked for passwords and email addresses. Plus I did not know that turning on notifications meant it would send me an email. So, when ever I when back to this page I eventually noticed that notifications where off even though I know I turned them on. At any rate, this is the way to go. If something is wrong, You get an email right away instead of waiting along time for the pop-up notice. On top of that, the popup notices keep popping up. I think the notices get accumulated and resent again, and again, so eventually you'll get lots of these pop-ups one after another, sometimes days old. It took me a while to find the option to clear all the pop ups. So, watch your emails so you'll get notified right away. Now that I've tried the USB hub a few times without success, I've concluded that maybe a dedicated hub with nothing but external drives might work. But, I don't have one and I could not conclude that if I did, I would not get the complaints from my PC that I exceeded the max USB limit. This I did get along with the other so I'm not sure which, if not both, corrupted my system. I should also note that It took me a while to conclude that the one USB error was coming from the cloud and not the PC. Now that everything else looked corrected, I eventually noted that task manager had changed from saying the Ethernet was 1Gbps to 100Mbps. This after I spent hours trying to fix why my router and PC network link LEDs were flashing amber instead of green. You must follow up with the disable button once you update the Ethernet driver. After the reboot the Ethernet came back on line with 1Gbps. Backups on clouds kick now. One showing as high as 76mbs. Running two cloud backups at once, one showed 70mbs or higher while the other would show 30. Task manager at 99%. Can't get better than that.

    Pioneer Elite SC-LX801 9.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver

Great strides in ease of use. But, complicated systems are still complicated.
This AVR is much easier to use and setup than Pioneer's last year and previous generation models. The sound is better and speakers are better utilized where 2 channel sound seam to get spread out over more of the speakers. But I'm still not sure, see bellow. In addition, although Pioneer has not yet returned to LED meters showing output to each speaker, they do show the speakers that are supposed to be on and the status button shows, for example 5.1 input to 7.1 output, as well as 1k or 4k video out. They still need the LED meters back though so I know when a speaker should be producing sound at any given moment. The AVR may show the speaker is being utilized, but I still don't know if a signal is being sent to it. Still sticking my ear up to a speaker to see if I can hear something. Quite annoying when there are 7.1.4 speakers and you can't get your head up there. An alternative would be to let me kick off the speaker volume level function and hear the audio actually playing one speaker at a time. This would be an improvement but the LED meters were best because I could up the volume on each speaker, hear the change, and get confirmation by watching the meter go up on the display face. Plus, I could see when a speaker is at max to confirm a speaker wire is disconnected or not. This is a very common and persistent problem when something in the room got moved and a speaker wire was pulled out. With all these speakers it can be months before you realize a speaker is not producing. Or worse never, or until you change something and retest the system.
