A fascinating story of the Spanish Civil War that almost did not get told
As I live in Spain, and always want to know more about the history of the country, I was pleased when this book was on my book group reading list. Most times that we have visitors from the UK, we are asked to take them to see Picasso's painting 'Guernica' at the Reina Sofia in Madrid. The picture is one that I have admired for many years, as it is so strong and iconic. This book tells the story of the painting, the artist, the Spanish Civil war, and how the town of Guernica was bombed and destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Civil War. Hitler and Mussolini backed Franco's fascist army, and practiced on the Spanish people in a dress rehearsal for the Second World War. This was the first time that a civilian population had been the targets of war. Some of the background to the Basque region and thier dispute with Spain is also discussed, and helps us understand the dispute about where the picture should now be on display. Why is it in Madrid, not Guernica, or the Basque town of Bilbao, which has its own stunning gallery, designed by Frank Gehry to display the picture? Some of the writing style is a bit flat, which is at odds with the bold and moving picture of Guernica. However, it is a fascinating read, explaining the imagery, the style and the impact that the picture has, as well as the universal appeal of such a picture for those who rally against any war. I would recommend this book to those who are interested in Picasso as an artist and as a larger than life figure in the 20th century. It should also appeal to those who are interested in 20th century Spain, and how the rest of Europe turned its back on the Spanish people and their legitimately elected government, allowing Franco to gain power and run the country as his own personal feifdom for so many decades.
