Book worth adding to your library and rereading
I lost my original copy of this book (or lent it and was not returned). For lack of space I try to only keep books that warrant rereading, of which this is one. It takes about 100 pages to get into it and then your perseverance is paid off—magnificent prose coupled with mystery and expert use of two time periods. Skip the ghastly movie version (or at least don’t compare it to the book). Jennifer Ehle and Jeremy Northam are undeniably good, as is an almost unrecognizable Lena Headey, in the Victorian storyline. Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart (both of whom I like in other films) are miscast as contemporary scholars.
