Rip-off if your MagLite came from factory with Xenon bulb
1 of 1 found this helpful Several months ago the bulb on my 2-D cell MagLite burned out. When I removed the lens cover to pull the bulb and see what size it took, I found that it used a xenon bulb similar, though larger, to my MiniMags. (I also found that my full-size MagLite did not have a storage spot in the endcap for an extra bulb, like my MiniMags do.)
I checked my local box stores, sporting goods stores, and hardware stores. Nobody had replacement bulbs.
When I looked online I found the xenon bulbs but they were sold only in retrofit kits that included the bulb, a collar, and an adaptor. All I needed was the bulb.
I contacted MagLite to see if they sold only the bulbs and this is what I was told:
"I'm afraid we only sell them as a kit. The reason is because there are still many Maglite's with the earlier model lamps, eventually we'll switch to the single lamp, but at this time, we are still selling as a kit.
Please contact us if we can be of further assistance."
With the number of full-size MagLites that have been sold in the last few years (I purchased mine about 3 years ago) you'd think the company would sell a one or two bulb package for the newer flashlights as well as the retrofit kits for the older units that use a standard bulb. Makes sense to me, especially since bulbs don't last forever.
In my opinion, it is a waste of money to have to buy the retrofit kit simply to get a bulb when your full-size MagLite came from the factory with a xenon bulb. However, if your bulb burns out like mine did and you need a replacement, you're stuck buying the entire kit. Not good marketing strategy on the part of MagLite, I think.
I'm one of those who likes to have several spare bulbs on hand should the one in my flashlight burn out. Kinda hard to do so when the bulb only comes in a package with parts that you don't need.
If MagLite hasn't started selling the replacement bulbs in packages by themselves by next year, I'm going to buy one of the LED upgrade kits (even with how expensive one of those is) for the 2-D cell units. I don't want to be stuck with having to buy something I need that comes with parts I don't need.
This kit is a good value if you have one of the older full-size MagLites that uses the standard bulb.
Terrible value if your full-size MagLite came from the factory with a xenon bulb because you end up paying for parts you don't need (collar and adaptor).
