Best In Show
Very well observed tongue in cheek portrayal of characters / politics / situations occurring in the world of competitive dog showing. Characterisations very well observed, written and acted. Made me laugh out loud, anyway. A must for anyone who is involved in dog shows but who is able to not take them too seriously and laugh at those who do! Worth watching for the fabulous dogs alone. Very funny.

A must-have for any cook with an interest in history
Beautiful photos in the book. All linked to the area or recipe on the opposite page. Delicious recipes, many of them not found in general cookery books. Very highly recommended to anyone wanting to increase their knowledge of Welsh social history.

A great read!
I first read this book about thirty years ago. I remembered that I had enjoyed it immensely at the time but must have loaned it to someone and not had it returned. I am so glad that having seen the copy listed for sale I decided to purchase it. Having read it today it has made me smile just as much as it did then. Some of the wording is perhaps not quite "PC" by today's namby-pamby standards but it's true to the speech and outlook of the 70's when it was written. Nothing obscene or offensive, just different to how it would be spoken and written now. It will particularly appeal to people familiar with life and characters of the "Valleys" - i.e. South Wales. It is particularly true and faithful to them, observed and written both with humour and deep affection. The Panteg population are so well drawn and recognisable that I could identify every single one of them as real people I knew and grew up with in the Valleys from the 50's and beyond. The inflections in speech, the sometimes unconscious humour of people who have lived through harsh times as well as better ones, the mores and hypocrisies of the day, the attempts to keep up appearances at all costs - all of those aspects are so well observed and woven woven into a complex, genuinely funny tale. Having picked it up and started reading it after such a long time, I wouldn't put it down again until I had finished it! One of those rare, really well crafted books which pulled me into the story, caused me to laugh aloud at times and left a smile on my face. It makes me wish that the late Sir Harry had spent more time writing fiction and less time singing and blowing the inevitable raspberries! Highly recommended. I will be hanging on to this copy, not loaning it out to anyone!
