Birthright is irrelevant
The premise of the book is that if we just know who we are "in Christ," then we can begin to deal with life's problems. Yet, plenty of people who are not in that category deal just fine.
The Bible is God's revelation to man about himself. We have a sin problem and the answer lies outside of us in the persons of the Triune God.
It is not about "us" nor what we can do for God. On the Mount of Transfiguration (Mark 9), Peter was all about what he could do for God's emissaries, Moses and Elijah. God responded with "This is my beloved son, Hear Him!" The Bible is about Him.

The Message, a good translation
The Message, in general, is a very good translation. Some have reservations because of a single translator. However, Peterson employed a host of OT and NT scholars to ensure accuracy. Their names (all reputable, I use their commentaries for graduate school in biblical studies) can be found on The Message website.
The Message is very much of a functional equivalent translation . . . sometimes called dynamic equivalent. Instead of translating word for word, the translator tries to paint a bigger picture than the individual words convey and instead makes clear the message of the scriptural author -- hence the title, The Message.
While The Message offers a fresh reading, I subscribe to Mark Strauss' advice (NIV translation committee member): Read a formal equivalent translation (KJV, ESV, NAS), a mediating translation (NIV, NET, CSB) and a functional equivalent translation (NLT, GNT, CEV) in order to receive a more complete grasp of the Bible's meaning. The Message is a very good supplement to your other translations.
