Would Buy Again
only complaint is i wish the bag had a place for the power supply and velcro or some other fastener to keep the flap closed. still nice to have a bag though. product seems well made overall and is nice for viewing negatives, which is why i bought it.

Nice Redesign - Makes LOTS of Ice
I bought this to replace the U-Line that's been in my home office for 20 years. I've only had it a month or so, but so far I like it. Have to say the old one had a much larger ice bucket that wasn't hidden behind a funky little interior door, and it also had additional racks on the inside of the main door. I liked both of those features very much, but in hindsight I suspect they were also responsible for that unit's biggest shortcomings. For one thing, the old ice maker was always fussy. Decent in the first few years I guess, but ever prone to having the ice at the bottom of the bucket quickly melt into a brick that I then had to dump so I could start a new batch etc. I had it serviced several times to try and keep it working right, but I eventually gave up, shut the ice maker off and just started filling the bucket with store bought ice when i needed some. The other thing about the old one (didn't really realize this until I got the new one), it was VERY noisy. The new one has a front door that's nothing but insulation (no racks) and I'm sure that has much to do w/the noticeably quieter operation. It's not silent, or maybe even as quiet as a regular refrigerator, but it is MUCH quieter than my last U-Line. And speaking of regular refrigerators, when you first start looking at these under counter units you find yourself wondering why they cost so much. Let's face it, you can go to any appliance store and buy a basic full sized fridge w/an ice maker for less than half the money. And if you have the space available and it suits your decor, I would suggest you do exactly that. But when you don't have the space and you want cold drinks, AND ice, under counter, in a single unit, your choices get pretty limited... and pricey. In fairness, it's a tricky little dance these things have to do... keep the ice area cold enough to make and preserve ice, and also keep the beverages at a more fridge like temperature, all in a single compartment on one thermostat behind a single main door. As I said at the beginning, I've only had the new unit a month, but these things are definitely true... 1. The redesigned main door takes away what was useful storage space but gives you considerably quieter operation in return. Having had both, I like the new door better. 2. The smaller ice bucket is still more than adequate, and that combined with giving the ice compartment it's own interior door seems to have taken the ice maker to another level. This thing makes LOTS of ice, and does a much better job of keeping it frozen. Lately I'm letting the icemaker run long enough to give me 2/3 of a bucket or so, then I shut it off and use that ice (so I don't always have ever more ancient ice at the bottom) and then I fire the maker back up again when I'm down to my last few cubes. I can safely say the old unit NEVER worked as well. 3. The old unit also had an on/off switch and a temperature knob recessed into the very bottom of the front grille. Almost had to get down on your knees w/a flashlight to access either. The new unit has a nice little digital control panel at the top of the inside compartment, well lit, a total snap to use. Bottom line, lots of road still ahead to assess overall quality compared to my last U-Line, but if you're looking for ONE under counter rig that will chill your drinks and snacks... AND make ice for you, this is one of very few units in the world that will do it.
