Proper design, condition, function and specification.
I would have preferred a transformer with 12 -and- 14 VAC output voltage taps in the event I wanted or needed to DC rectify the output, where a voltage drop of ~ 2 volts would occur.

What's not to like ?
Price, performance, and reliability.
Or... performance, reliability, and price.
Reliability factor unknown at initial usage.
I will presume good over time for this type basic circuit and components.
Will always prefer a corded plug on the input side for an uncluttered wall power outlet.

I Can Hear It Now !
These power cells -and the low cost- have kept our phones in a usable condition for years beyond what we anticipated, due mainly to the Ni-Mh chemistry vs the older NiCad.
