Sennheiser dynamic neodymium capsule driver 300 ohm for HD650 - (092855)

Sennhieser HD650 Lives again
And aged S/H pair of HD650's was causing me concern. The sound was dull from one side. Swapping the wires over still left the same side sounding dull which pointed to a driver. I opened it up to find that the previous owner had replaced one driver with an HD600 unit. I decided to replace both drivers to keep them better matched, and this company had them available. Its a no tools quick and easy job to replace the drivers units. The phones are now well balanced sided to side, The produce a very believable sound stage, and I personally do not find them fatiguing. The sound is slightly restrained and I think they need to be run in for about 70 to 100 hours.
Graham Slee Communicator Gram Amp 2 Moving Magnet (MM) Phono Stage

What Moving Magnet Vinyl Cartridges need
The Graham Slee Communicator, plays in leagues far above its price point suggests. It's impressively low noise, good frequency response, clean sounding, and seems to hold timing of the performance together in a way that many pre amps just cant quite manage. Great Value for money

Sennheiser HD 595 Headphones
Sennheiser HD 595 Headphones As a sound engineer I have used many different models of head phones. Different types suit different applications, so whilst it would be nice to find a universal pair, it just isnt going to happen. The HD595s are an open backed design, that sit over the whole ear. The pads are velveted and allow extended listening without becoming sticky. The headband is quite broad and spreads the weight well, and it holds the pad firmly against the head but without it feeling like a vice. The 3m cable isnt coiled so you can use them without them tugging across a room. Its not ideal for use with MP3 players not only due to the length of the cable, but also it is supplied with a 6.35mm gold plated jack plug, and you need to use the supplied 3.5mm adaptor, which makes the plug assembly rather big and inconvenient for small pocket players. Being open backed, they allow a fair amount of room noise to get through to the listener, this means you dont feel too isolated, and if you do need to talk to someone, you don't end up shouting at them. They are quite efficient and easy to drive so plenty of volume can be easily generated. The down side to this is the phones do leak sound, which might be off putting to others in a quite room when listening to louder passages. In terms of sound quality, that is a personal and very subjective matter, but there is no doubt they have a wide frequency response. Generally well balanced but perhaps a little forward in the mid range, giving voice frequencies slightly more prominence. The open backed design also seems to allow the apparent soundstage to be wide, and it becomes easy to pick out individual sound sources in the stereo image. Bass sounds have a good attack, and low frequencies are articulated well, however those into drum and bass music may find the bass to light for their liking. My ageing and falling apart Wharfedale Isodynamics still produce a wonderful sound, and the HD595s virtually match them, but they are eminently more practical, and are likely to become my preferred phones for pleasure listening. If you can afford to push the boat out, you should consider the HD600 series, but as lower cost alternative the HD595 represents good value, and even better if you can pick up a used pair.
