Very useful
This is for someone who has has at least a college semester of Spanish. That level of vocabulary is necessary to understand the language used in the text. The exercises hold one's attention, and it is "interesting" and "compelling" as much as a grammar workbook can be expected to be (albeit, have a dictionary on hand, because not all 101 classes teach exactly the same vocabulary). It is very good practice for someone who is looking for some supplemental exercises to their regular classroom work, who is an autodidact, or who is in an immersion program, and wants a little reinforcement to be correct. It is easy to follow without the help of an instructor, so it is great for self-study, but it is not a standalone text-- you will not learn Spanish just by working through this book. However, as a supplement to increase confidence and conversancy, it is great. I used it between classes to help retain what I had already learned, and to get a little bit of a headstart on the next semester's work, and it was perfect for that.
I was lucky in that I found a text that was used, and had a little shelf-wear, so was very inexpensive, but had no writing in it, so I had it all to myself. If you are so fortunate as to find a copy like this, it is a bargain at twice the price. I imagine that even at the cover price, it is still a very good deal, because it is such a useful book; however, as long as you are buying on eBay, you are bound to get one marked down. Be sure to check the description to make sure it has all the pages, and no writing (or very little writing, and only in pencil, for an extremely cheap copy).
