Meade Equatorial Wedge for LX200 Classic
I am restoring a Meade LX200 Classic telescope which consisted of a heavy duty Meade tripod, the equatorial wedge mount, and a 8" LX200 SCT. These were owned by a friend whom lost the wedge and let the tripod and the LX200 to deteriorate by storing it in a tool shed for years.
The tripod has been restored to original conditions and the LX200 is still undergoing some repairs to the RA lock and for removal of mold on the optics. I purchased this used equatorial wedge after giving up on finding the lost original. I was surprised how clean it was when it arrived. Almost as if it had never been used. Assembly was a snap, just a matter of minutes. Coupling it to the tripod took some doing, since the bolt threads in the tripod had accumulated some layers of dust that caused oxidation, thus binding the bolts when trying to thread them. After some cleaning and re-threading, everything fit together, nice and solid.
The tripod and wedge feel very solid and steady. The level bubble is great help in getting things set up. The fine azimuth adjuster works better than I had anticipated. Once the latitude and azimuth are set on the wedge the locking bolts secure everything in place very easily and without much effort. Mounting the SCT is easy, a one-person task, and once secured with all three bolts, it feels rock solid.
The magnetic compass works and locks nice, gives the SCT a great classic looks, but I doubt I will be using it. A friend and I are experimenting on using an iPhone as the compass and as the latitude level adjustment. We're thinking of designing a couple of carriers for the iPhone, one for the azimuth adjustment and another for the latitude adjustment, to be built on a 3D printer.
Overall, the equatorial wedge is solidly built, easy to put together and service, and has been a great addition to the restoration of the Meade 8" LX200. I am glad I was able to acquire it.

ETX-90 Right Tube Adapter Repair
The RTA broke off due to deficiencies in the engineering design, making the whole telescope unusable. The repair service was quick and effective and restored the telescope to full operations within a week or so. The $35 repair cost was worth it to salvage a $400+ scope.

2 of 2 found this helpful The telescope of very good quality and was in excellent condition with the exception of the declination gear which was broken. This has been a recurring problem with this model telescope. However, I was able to find an online repair service which did an excellent job o just $35. The gear is now better than new and the scope works fine.
