To buy or not to buy, that is the question
1 of 1 found this helpful I set out to find one of these lenses because for years i have been using, as a 'standard lens', a 24-85mm canon on successive digitals that I have owned from 2003. In reality being a 30 something mm to over a 100mm, considering the small Canon sensor. I read lots on the internet about users of Sigma lenses 'returning' them to dealers because of optical quirks over certain apertures and/or focal lengths. Believing that the second one they received was 'better'. Whilst in some cases this is bound to happen, i think that the majority of problems are down to the fact one needs to work within the non manufacturers lenses 'parameters', that is getting to know where their faults are and avoid them. I dont think there are many users of the 10-20 Sigma that havnt found, in the intermediate focal lengths and wider apertures, some out of focus areas in the outside of the image. Quite often only on the left hand side!!. Using the lens at its 10 or 20 focal length and keeping to f11 or even f16 produces stunning results, with exceptional sharpness right across the frame. With 'grainless 400 & 800 asa settings on most digitals now this isnt a problem. This brings me to the 18-50 2.8. After shooting a few hundred frames, as yet, I havnt found any of the quirks or problems found on the 10-20. It is a fine lens and Sigma have excelled at the design and manufacturing quality. All apertures and all focal lengths produces excellent results. Being a 2.8, autofocus, despite not being a HSM lens, is instant. Very rapid, one handed, press style of shooting renders every frame as sharp as you could possible want it. I have always been against zooming into the corners of my images and seeing if the edges are as sharp as the middle. One wouldnt look at a gallery framed photograph and whip out a magnifying glass to check out the corners. If you want to blow up photos big, you should think about making sure that, as with any lens, you stop it down to its optimum aperture, which we all know is going to be f8/11 ish. I am not a purist, I cant afford to be, so Sigma are a perfect compromise at much less cost that Canon lenses. I strongly believe that you will not compromise your photography by buying 'less expensive' lenses as long as you know and learn how to get the best out of them.
