A great value camcorder
Although rather old now, this is a great value camcorder with surprising range of functions. This is a solid, hefty device that looks like a movie-camera should look. If you want something lighter and smaller then this is not for you. But you won't lose this down the back of a sofa.
Having previously owned the 167 model, I tried a number of different formats before plumping for this.
This is mini dv format. The resolution is fine at 520 and it has processor which improves the picture quality no end. Capture via firewire is straightforward and I have used both Corel and Power Director to do this. The advantage of the format is that you can capture uncompressed AVI as well as MPEG2 and are not forced to use proprietry compression software which is often the case in hard drive models, and dvd models.
The camera also has audio input for external mics and has an av input to copy onto the dv tape. The external mic function is extremely useful for noisy locations when the inbuilt mics are pretty useless in picking up the subject. The battery life is pretty good, although is drastically affected by the built in light which is to be expected.
The optical zoom is 10x, which is on the low side, but most of my work is handheld or indoors and this is ample.
The size of the camera means that the controls are actually designed for the hands of adults rather than three year olds which more modern and petite cameras seem to be designed for. This makes all the difference.
And the best thing? You can snap these up on ebay for under £50
