Vintage Warhammer
Okay so lots of people have heard of Warhammer, but its full name?
Warhammer: The Game of Fantasy Battles.
This idea began many moons ago in the early eighties and its roots go back even further, but if you want a proper game that's fun, artistic, educational, socially driven and totally immersive, then Warhammer is for you. Pick up an old copy of the rulebook, (any edition will do) plus find a few miniatures on eBay to play with, and you and a friend or three will disappear down that rabbit hole with no hope of returning.
This review is based on the 2nd Edition of Warhammer, a slightly more "rules-centric" but no less entertaining edition of the game, it was written before the games balance had fully been measured and corrected. This edition sheds some of the first light into the history and composition of the armies and races of the Warhammer Universe.
Set in "The Old World" it allows for small skirmish games to be played in an evening, as well as large sieges and battles that can play out over the course of an entire weekend! Including rules for fully customizable characters and troops with more streamlined statistics than the 1st Edition, this edition is a true Milestone of Tabletop Wargaming.
Penned by the (in)famous Rick Priestly and a small team of veteran Wargamers, Warhammer received a lot of kudos from other game designers/writers and quickly cemented itself as one of the best systems for fantasy and historical wargaming. As it would be for decades to come.
