A disappointment from a brand I've always admired
I have used various Sykes Pickavant tools over the years and been impressed, but this one has been a disappointment. The materials are certainly of a very high quality, but the shaft the knurled ring is fixed to is so tight in the tool body that it cannot be turned without clamping the body in a vice first. As a result it is impossible to fit the tool onto a stud and rotate the shaft by hand or with a spanner (as you should be able to do) so the knurled ring butts up against the stud ready for use. Even disassembling the shaft and lubricating it had no effect - the clearance is simply too tight, and it severely limits the utility of the tool as a result - not to mention making it an absolute b*tch to use.

Affordable alternator repair
Much cheaper than replacing the entire alternator, this regulator can be used to repair a wide range of Bosch alternators fitted to VW Group models. I fitted it to a Sharan 1.8T, and even though access under the bonnet is pretty limited I managed to do it without removing the alternator. Took me about an hour all told. Very pleased with the result.

Works perfectly when used as intended!
2 of 2 found this helpful Firstly, this tool is NOT intended to hold the camshaft in position while you loosen or tighten the bolt holding the camshaft sprocket to the cam (the torque setting for which is 50 Nm + 90 degrees). If you believe that it could possibly absorb that much torque without breaking (as another buyer clearly did) then you really should not be working on anything mechanical. Its purpose is to hold the cams in the correct position relative to the crankshaft so the valve timing is correct when you change the timing chain, a function it performs perfectly well. A completely different tool is available to hold the cam sprocket when loosening or tightening its retaining bolt.
