Tonerider Vintage.
I have a MIJ late 70's Strat 57 copy. The guitar is of high quality but the original pickups were ceramic and pretty poor. I had already replaced them with some from Ironstone Pickups fitted with flat AlNiCO magnets and these were a worthwhile upgrade. However I still didn’t get the classic Strat sound that I was looking for. In the end I decided to take the plunge and bought the Tonerider Strat Pure Vintage. The pickups arrived nicely boxed, under the foam in the base I found the six screws and rubber spacers for mounting the pickup. The middle pickup has different colour wire and the length of ware is pre-cut to the correct length and pre-tinned for soldering. I installed by first twisting the wire of each pickup together. The wire is very formable so it will stay in place once soldered without needing any support. It made putting the scratch plate assembly back in very easy. The screws supplied were larger than the ones I removed. Whilst the thinner screws I had were perfect for the original and Ironstone plastic base the fibreboard used on the Toneriders needs the bigger screw to prevent the thread from pulling through when adjusting the height. The pickups met expectation, I get exactly the Strat sound I wanted from these pickups, no harshness, great dual-pickup quack, and a really nice tone from the middle and neck. Very pleased, and well worth the cash. I have a 22nF tone control capacitor fitted which rolls off less highs. One note was that the Ironstone pickups had a slightly narrower pole spacing for the neck pickup. I had intended to use the aged cream pickup covers that came with the Ironstone but the spacing of the Toneriders is the same for all three pickups, so I couldn’t get the old neck pickup cover to fit. I ended up fitting the white covers that came with the Toneriders.
