Konica-Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 35mm Film Scanner (Windows & Mac) #3
11 May, 2016
Best Resolution of any desktop scanner
The Minolta Dimage 5400 has been out of production for over 10 years and parts are no longer being made for them. They tend to be very clunky and slow to use as well, and, like most of the older scanners, they will not run on any of the newer operating systems. They also have very shallow depth of field which makes it difficult to get an entire image sharp in one scan if the slide being scanned is not flat. So why bother? Simply because they can also make the best scans of any desktop scanner regardless of claimed resolution. The 5400dpi resolution is twice the resolution of just about any slide you will ever encounter, and the scans from this scanner come pretty close to capturing 100% of the information on the original slide. As to color accuracy, it's irrelevant; what you want is to capture as much of the information on the original slide as you can. All the color adjustments, if needed, should take place in Photoshop or equivalent after the scan is made.
