Lightweight and easily stored
2 of 2 found this helpful May work well on softwood or fresh hardwood but splitting seasoned hardwood takes considerable effort especially on the stroke that actually opens up the log. Just gave up on anything with large knots. Was not always possible to advance the log sufficiently for the next ratchet to become engaged, so kept a small lump hammer handy to tap further on or to knock log off the splitting head. Also the foot pedal could be at least 50% larger. With hindsight, at my age (late 70s) wish that I had spent a bit more and bought electric or hydraulic although these are much heavier and require more storage space. May be OK for those younger and fitter.
