Disturbing but great silent film
This is an outstanding Chaney film. He is at his best, & his director--Seastrom--was more gifted than other directors Chaney had. But it is also a particularly disturbing & dark film, displaying to the full the human desire to exploit, betray, & humiliate others. Not a cheerful film but one of the great silents nonetheless.

engaging melodrama
This is an outstanding silent melodrama: excellent cast, very well photographed, with an involving & often rather subtle plot. Highly recommended.
