1.5 LITRE HAWKINS CLASSIC ALUMINIUM PRESSURE COOKER
01 Sep, 2016
Improved classic design
I have only one hand, so twisting lids on/off ain't easy, but the design of the Hawkins with the catch on the handle makes it easier to operate unidextrously. The safety valve on my last one blew out after a couple of years' use, so I'm going to say it was not particularly durable. But the design of the pressure regulator (the vent weight) has been improved and they now include a handy reference card, in Hindi & English, of tips 'to prevent unnecessary fusing of the safety valve,' so here's hoping this one lasts longer. It's the smallest size, ideal for a single person, and a great bit of kit for cooking beans and pulses, as you just don't seem to get the same consistency using a conventional pan. Indeed, every vegetarian needs a pressure cooker! Hawkins don't seem to have decent UK distribution, so eBay is your best bet to buy one like this, although I wish one could get the snazzier anodised model, too.

Decade old camera nearing obsolescence.
Ten year old 4MP camera that cost me under a tenner. Reminds me of its age whenever I turn it on because the clock defaults to 2004! Powered by x2 AA batteries, which is fine because I have some rechargable ones and downloads via USB cable direct to my low-end Mac (which is about the same vintage!) Image quality isn't as good as my camera phone, TBF, and there's no anti-shake, so my images tend to be blurred. A decade is a long time in the digital world and its great that this old camera still works. It suits my needs for the time being and, likesay, it cost under a tenner, but really it belongs in a museum.

Forbo Monel cleaner 1 Litre

The best cleaner/protector for lino/marmoleum floors
This stuff may seem absurdly expensive for floor cleaner, but it is the best specialist product for linoleum or marmoleum floors. You'll find that it leaves your lino looking like new and that it stays looking good longer. Also, it's powerful stuff, so you don't need to use much and a litre will last you a lot longer than that other, cheaper stuff you used to buy from the supermarket. Which is just as well, considering its price.
