Does what it says on the cover
Starting out in model railways can be very daunting for the inexperienced beginner. This book, as it says on the cover, is all about taking those first steps from a simple train set oval of track to a fully scenic model railway. The book contains chapters on baseboard construction, track laying, wiring and control, scenic work, buildings and structures, operation and a couple of sample layout plans that can be built by a beginner with basic skills. There is also a glossary that explains a lot of the inevitable jargon that comes with model railways and puts some people off.I bought this book because I am in this position of wanting to move on from a train set but lacking the skills and confidence to get on with it. I have now after years of procrastinating started on my layout and after flicking through the book found a lot of helpful hints and advice.

Great little locomotives
The retooled Hornby LBSCR Terrier loco is very detailed and captures the detail differences between members of the class. I bought the KESR anniversary pack to add to my collection of LBSCR Terriers in Stroudley Improved engine green.

A goldmine of information for Southern Railway fans
I bought this book because I had already bought some of Hornby's excellent Maunsell coaches and I wanted to find out a bit more about them. I have only briefly looked through the book but it is packed with information and photographs. I have no hesitation in recommending this book to modellers or those with an interest in the Southern Railway.
