Ben Stempton's Boy by Ron Yates is a fine example of gritty realism in the Southern Gothic tradition.
This is a trip back to the early 70s, a time of social upheaval. The careful layering of details provide nostalgia for readers old enough to remember, and historical instruction for younger readers. The action takes place in the rural South, where habits and customs are deeply ingrained and secrets are slow to surface.
The protagonist, Randy Walls, has just turned eighteen and is out of Pittsburgh's foster care system. He hitchhikes to Georgia to try and locate a great uncle, his only living relative. This doesn't work out, as the man died before Randy got there.
An old man in a pulpwood truck, Ben Stempton, comes along and offers the distraught young man a ride, then a job and a shack to live in. Thus begins a long, complicated entanglement and a roller-coaster ride for the characters and the reader.
Ben Stempton has a daughter, Stacy, who has an abusive redneck boyfriend. Things get complicated, but every twist and turn is totally believable, the result of the characters' choices and the circumstances that make them who they are. This is gritty realism at its best.
Some of the scenes are shocking and many are totally unexpected. The author is able to turn the old Southern stereotypes inside out. Randy, as the outsider from up north, learns many lessons about love, responsibility, and what makes a family. By the end of the novel he has found what he came for—after grueling physical labor, disappointment, and heartbreak—and he has become a man.
The book has substance, leaving the reader with much to think about, but it's a lively read with a cinematic quality. The many cliffhangers, secrets, and questions keep the reader turning pages. This quality of substance and enjoyable readability is the mark of a talented wordsmith. Indeed, much of the writing is beautiful and poignant without being too florid or sentimental.
Fans of realistic literary fiction, the Southern tradition, or Southern Gothic will enjoy this unusual, un-trendy novel.

Pre-assembled, easily installed
Use a bit of common sense when placing the hooks. Pull the straps through properly. Pull tight. Feels secure, doesn't it? I felt very confident carrying two bikes over bumpy roads. Heck, I'd go cross-country with this rig! Ingenious design, quality materials, and great price. Buy it!

Look and Sound Great
Don't let the price fool you. These are quality cymbals. Read the specs, try them, compare. In all around value, especially SOUND, they hold up well against name brands costing three times as much.
