A View of the Future Which Appalls, But Brings Courage
1 of 2 found this helpful "Remember, remember the 5th of November, the gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot."
I enjoyed V for Vendetta when it appeared on cable, but the underlying message ("People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.") is very pertinent to today's post 9/11 world. Using war, terrorism and virulent plague as a means to subjugate England, the government has created a police state which rivals Nazi Germany, but all media-fied to create an illusion of a peaceful society. When a shadowy figure begins to show the people upon what their society is built ("While the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there?"), he also invites them to join him to a November 5th celebration of Guy Fawkes Day (a holiday in England today)at Trafalgar Square one year in the future. After this, a series of violent events, from both the government and V the rebel, lead to a climactic and inevitable conclusion, answering for all time, "Which is it we want to be known for - "peace" or "freedom"?
Many have noted that this film is an indictment of American society, with its newly created Homeland Security, with its disclosures of eavesdropping on personal phone calls, reading private e-mail, letters, and the like. But this film isn't really about England or America, but _any_ country which allows itself to be led totally by its government to allow it to shape perception of the world and of its own society.
This DVD came as a real treat as it included not only the usual commentary, trailers, and so on, but also included an abridged version of Alan Lloyd's original graphic novel, V for Vendetta. While this booklet is only a taster of the longer graphic novel, it gives you the atmosphere and mood of the original work which led to the Wachowski Brothers' brilliant movie adaptation.
V's warning in the movie is a warning to any society anywhere which allows the government to structure its view of the world:
"Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well, certainly there are those who are more responsible than others...and they will be held accountable.
But again, truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense: fear got the best of you. And in your panic, you turned to the now High Chancellor Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace. And all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent."
A chilling vision of the future - a future created by a society that has to be urged and shown how to think again for themselves. V for Vendetta is a film worth watching, buying, and re-watching, again and again - to remind us all that such should never occur within our lifetime.

The Scent of Jasmine that Lasts
King of Jasmine is a Saudi perfume which has incredible lasting scent power throughout the day, and gives you a constant aroma of Jasmine flowers that make wearing it a treat.
I have been so please with this perfume I have ordered it more than once as I use up previous buys, and have also given it as gifts to relatives and friends.
I highly recommend this perfume.

Good Musical Plectrums for Psaltery Use
I ordered these plectrums for use in playing the plucked psaltery, which I obtained some time ago. The grips are tight on the fingers, giving a good and clear resonance when plucked and a very pleasing sound to the music produced.
I recommend these plectrums.
